A small group of artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced robots recently faced off in a match-up in China, according to a May 26 report from Global Times.
The event, part of the World Robot Competition’s Mecha Fighting Series, featured four robots created by Unitree, a robotics company based in China.
Each robot weighed around 35 kilograms and stood just over 1.3 meters tall.

Rather than fighting on their own, the robots were controlled by humans. According to a Unitree team member, the robots were trained to perform different moves, but a person was in charge during the matches.
Before the real action began, the robots showed off various kicks and punches to help organizers finalize the competition rules.
Each match consisted of three rounds, each lasting two minutes. Robots earned points for successful hits, one for a punch to the head, three for a kick to the same area. Falling cost five points, while staying down for more than eight seconds led to a ten-point penalty.
Unitree’s director, Wang Qixin, explained during the event, which was broadcast on state broadcaster CCTV, “First of all, the motion capture will be based on some professional fighting athletes. Based on their motion capture data, the robot will learn these movements in the virtual world”.
