McCormac shared in a post on X that he would pay for ten guards to patrol Bedford’s town centre every Saturday.
He said he felt this step was necessary because he believes the local police are not handling the rise in crime. McCormack claimed that Bedford has seen more theft, harassment, and anti-social behavior, which has led to fewer visitors and the closure of local shops.

McCormac stated that he had given the police a warning before proceeding with the plan. He also noted that his decision came after consulting with local residents and inviting them to a public meeting to discuss possible next steps.
While McCormack said his goal is to make the town feel safer, UK law does not allow private citizens to act as law enforcement. Legal experts, such as those at JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors, have noted that private security groups cannot act in the same manner as the police.
Because of this, the guards will likely focus on monitoring the area and passing on footage or other information to the police rather than trying to intervene directly.
