Meta is setting up a new artificial intelligence (AI) unit focused on developing “superintelligence”, a system that would surpass human thinking, according to a June 10 report by The New York Times.

Meta has brought in Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old CEO of Scale AI, to lead this new group. Alongside this, Meta is in discussions to invest billions of dollars into Wang’s company.

As part of the deal, several Scale AI employees may also join the new lab. Meta has also been attempting to recruit AI researchers from top companies, such as OpenAI and Google. Some of them have reportedly accepted offers that include very large pay packages.
