Pete Davidson will star alongside Oscar winner Casey Affleck in a new Bitcoin documentary titled “Killing Satoshi” to be helmed by “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman.
The Hollywood feature film will be a conspiracy thriller which will explore the origins of the largest crypto by market capitalization.
It will also take a look at Bitcoin’s mysterious pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, who, thus far, nobody has been able to link to a real-world identity.

Hollywood Giants Team Up To Turn The Spotlight On Satoshi Nakamoto And Bitcoin
In addition to Liman, who also directed “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Swingers,” Nick Schenk will write the film’s screenplay.
Filmmakers say the film will weave together “political intrigue, high-tech espionage and a race against time” as forces across the globe “wage an all-out battle for control.”
“I love David and Goliath stories,” Liman told Variety, adding that the upcoming film will follow “unlikely antiheroes taking on the most powerful people on the planet in an epic battle that strikes at the core of what is money and who controls it.”
The film will also be produced by former Relativity Media CEO Ryan Kavanaugh, who financed films including “The Social Network” and “The Fighter” prior to his studio filing for bankruptcy in 2015. Joining him in producing the film are Lawrence Grey and Shane Valdez.
“Killing Satoshi” will be fully overseen by the UK company Production Lens, which was founded by Kavanaugh, Gery and Garret Grant, who helped produce films such as “The Matrix Resurrections” and “Blue Beetle.”
Kavanaugh, who once tried to launch a crypto called Proxicoin to help fund film projects, says that “Killing Satoshi” will be more than just a movie about Bitcoin and its elusive creator, adding that it will also focus on what the digital asset stands for.
According to him, the upcoming film is being viewed much the same way they viewed “Social Network” and its look into Facebook’s creation.
Bitcoin Creator’s Identity Remains A Mystery
Since Bitcoin’s inception over a decade ago, there have been several attempts to uncover the blockchain creator’s identity.
The most notable attempt was by an HBO film called “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” released in 2024.
In the build up to the film’s release, its director, Cullen Hoback, said that Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity was finally discovered. In the film, he then named Canadian crypto expert Peter Todd as Bitcoin’s elusive creator.

However, Todd has since vehemently denied Hoback’s claim. The documentary has also faced a fair share of criticism for being speculative and lacking any substantial evidence.
Fingers have also been pointed to several others in the past. One of the people suspected to be Bitcoin’s creator is Hal Finney, a cryptographer who received the first-ever Bitcoin transaction. He also lived near a man named Dorian Nakamoto, who the media falsely named as Bitcoin’s developer as well.
Prior to passing away in 2014, Finney continued to deny being Satoshi Nakamoto.
Nick Szabo, who created “bit gold” before Bitcoin was launched, was also suspected to be Bitcoin’s creator, a claim that he has denied.
While Todd and others deny being Satoshi Nakamoto, some, like Australian computer scientist Craig Wright, claimed to have developed Bitcoin.
Wright also went on to file several lawsuits against software developers in the crypto space who built products for Bitcoin, claiming that they did not have his permission to use what he argued was his intellectual property.
In December 2024, a London High Court judge ruled that Wright was not Satoshi Nakamoto and was not the author of Bitcoin’s whitepaper.
From Anonymous Bitcoin Creator To Crypto Billionaire
Satoshi Nakamoto’s last correspondence was a private email that was sent to software developer Gavin Andresen in April 2011.
In his email to Andresen, he simply said, “I’ve moved on to other things.”
Wallets connected to Satoshi Nakamoto still hold around 1.1 million BTC, giving the creator a net worth of over $121 billion at current prices. These coins have never been moved.
