Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging and social media mobile application, is transforming the non-fungible token landscape by leveraging its massive user base to drive NFT adoption and create new ways to interact with digital collectibles, primarily through integration with its TON blockchain network for non-fungible token gifts, stickers, and usernames. To expand this mission, Telegram has integrated a new API to make NFT trading simpler.

NFT Trading Now Made Simpler On Telegram

In an August 27 blog post, Telegram, through its sticker pack x account, confirmed that they have rolled out a new upgrade on its NFT ecosystem to improve trading of non-fungible token stickers and other digital assets. Telegram has integrated a new API built for the recently published NFT 2.0 standard. NFT 2.0 refers to the next evolutionary phase of NFTs, moving beyond digital art NFTs to incorporate utility, programmability, dynamic properties, interoperability, and improved sustainability.

Launched in 2013, Telegram is a cloud-based instant messaging and social media app known for focusing on ultra speed, security, and features like large groups, channels for broadcasting, and customizable bots. It allows users to send messages, photos, videos, and various file types from contacts to friends and groups. It also allows for seamless cross-device use by storing content in the cloud, and offers optional end-to-end encrypted “Secret Chats” for increased privacy.

Telegram began officially supporting non-fungible tokens last year, allowing social media users to convert their animated in-app Gifts into NFTs on The Open Network (TON) blockchain. This feature marked Telegram’s first major step into the NFT space by making these digital assets a part of the messaging experience. It enabled social media users to display and trade their unique digital assets directly within the app.

Telegram experienced a surge in mainstream NFT adoption earlier in late 2024, particularly in its gaming ecosystem, driven by the seamless integration of NFTs into games like Hamster Kombat and the introduction of new on-chain assets like Gifts and usernames. By Q3 2024, unique wallets transferring NFTs on Telegram increased fivefold to over one million, signaling a substantial growth in user engagement and ownership of digital collectibles within the platform.

Stickers Are Making NFTs on TON Great Again

By bringing NFTs into the social realm, Telegram makes digital ownership more accessible and appealing, even to those previously uninterested in NFTs, and facilitates targeted communities for NFT marketing and engagement. To push the NFT adoption even higher, it has integrated a new API, a software tool that allows applications and systems to communicate with each other, enabling automated access to real-time market data, historical data, and the ability to execute trades or interact with blockchains.

Under the new upgrade, non-fungible token stickers will have two powers just like the Telegram Gifts. Crypto users can choose to trade their sticker on Telegram (off-chain), a smooth platform for transfers and simple for non-crypto users, or on TON (on-chain), a platform offering real NFTs in your wallet and tradable across various NFT marketplaces. The goal of this NFT integration is to make NFT trading simple for both worlds.
